T206 Baseball Cards: Collecting "The Monster"
Posted by Cardboard Picasso on Oct 22nd 2026
T206 is the most famous set of the tobacco era. The American Tobacco Company issued it in cigarette and loose tobacco packs from 1909 to 1911, and the set has 524 cards. Because each card could carry the back of one of 16 tobacco brands, the number of front-and-back combinations is far larger than 524, which is why collectors call T206 "The Monster." Its checklist is full of Hall of Famers, including Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb.
Ty Cobb: Four Poses, One Famous Back

Ty Cobb appears on four different T206 cards: the red portrait, the green portrait, bat off shoulder and bat on shoulder. Cobb collectors try to own all four. In August 2024 a PSA 9 bat-off-shoulder Cobb sold for $870,000 at Heritage Auctions. The red portrait is also the only front found with the rare "Ty Cobb" tobacco back.
The 16 Tobacco Backs

Each T206 card was printed with the ad of one of 16 tobacco brands on the back: Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Old Mill, Polar Bear, Sovereign, El Principe de Gales (EPDG), American Beauty, Cycle, Tolstoi, Hindu, Broad Leaf, Carolina Brights, Lenox, Drum, Uzit and Ty Cobb. Piedmont and Sweet Caporal are the most common. Backs like Drum, Lenox, Uzit, Broad Leaf, Carolina Brights and Ty Cobb are much scarcer and can multiply a card's value, even for a common player.
Back Color Variations

Some brands were printed in more than one ink color. Hindu backs, for example, come in brown and in a much scarcer red. Collectors who chase "back runs" try to own a player with as many different backs and colors as possible.
The Rarest T206 Cards

Beyond the Wagner, a few cards stand above the rest. The Eddie Plank is the second most valuable card in the set; a PSA 7 sold privately for $700,000 in 2012. The Sherry Magee error misspells his name "Magie" and was corrected during the print run. The Joe Doyle "N.Y. Nat'l" error and the Ray Demmitt St. Louis variation are other scarce cards that set builders treat as major hurdles.
The Honus Wagner

The T206 Honus Wagner is the most famous baseball card ever made. Fewer than 60 authenticated copies are known. The best known is the PSA 8 example once owned by Wayne Gretzky, who bought it with Bruce McNall in 1991 for $451,000; it later sold for $2.8 million in 2007. In 2013 auctioneer Bill Mastro admitted he had trimmed that card before it was graded. In August 2022 a different Wagner sold for $7.25 million, the highest price for any T206.
